Obituary

THOMAS TALLY WILLIAMS, JR.  passed from this life on March 13, 2023, at the age of 94, in his home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on February 4, 1929, in the Williams Cove Community in Winchester, Tenn., to the late Tally Edward Williams and Louise Faris Wiliams. He was the oldest of 10 children.  He spent all of his life farming and managing a dairy in Williams Cove.  He loved Williams Cove and Franklin County.

His love for Jersey cows started at a very early age.  When he was about six (6) years old, he and his father, had been to Winchester and were on their way back to Williams Cove.  They stopped at the farm of Tally Sr.'s Uncle, Dr. Templeton, and while Tally Sr., was visiting with his uncle, Tally Jr. made his way to the barn and began to play with the baby calves.  When Tally Sr. went to find him, his uncle said, "That boy needs one of these calves, Tally", so he gave Tally Jr. his first Jersey calf.  That began Tally Jr.'s love of Jersey Cows and the Dairy Industry.

During his childhood and teenage years, he was active in 4-H and in showing dairy cows.  He and his siblings won many awards for their showmanship.  Tally was honored with Premier Dairy Breeder awards several times at the Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia State Fairs and had five (5) 1st place winners at the All-American Jersey Show in Louisville, Kentucky.  He bred Jersey cows and sold them throughout the south and he screened each farm and family that bought his cows to be sure they would take care of them as he did.

Tally drove the Keith Springs Mountain Bus #28 route for many years, as well as milked cows twice each day and farmed with his Dad and brothers.  It was a hard life, but one he loved.

In 1950, he was drafted into the Korean War and served a short time.  He met his wife, Jean of 60 years in 1957 at the Campus Grill on the Boulevard in Winchester, Tenn., and they later married in January, 1958.  They had three children and raised them on the farm in Williams Cove.

In his later years, he enjoyed eating and visiting at Skip's Grill on a daily basis with all of his friends in Franklin County and Williams Cove.

Tally was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Jean, as well as his younger brother, Jerry Williams.

Tally is survived by his children, Lynne W. Curtis (Steve) of Winchester, Tenn., Tad Williams of Hermitage, Tenn. and Elaine W. Middleton (Ross) of Ocala, Fla., and by his Grandchildren; Josh Curtis (Sinclair) of Richmond, Va., Jaclynne Curtis McPheron (Chris) of Winchester, Tenn., Mark Fox, II (Mallory) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Nick Fox (Elizabeth) of Parris Island, SC, and he leaves behind 7 Great-Grandchildren whom he dearly loved.

He is also survived by his siblings, Joyce A. Moore, Frank Williams, and Linda Vaughn of Winchester, Tenn., and sister and brother-in-laws, Roy & Wilma Garner and Marilyn and John Rampy of Winchester, Tenn., also siblings, Joe E. Williams, Bobbye W. Stoolfire, Emma Sandberg, Peggy Smithson and Doris Eldridge all of Texas.  Great Aunts, Mary Elizabeth Faris and Sarah Lynne King, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, as well as many, many friends and neighbors.  He also loved and appreciated his special caregivers, who took wonderful care of him during his final months.
