MAJOR WILLIAM CHARLES HARTING, age 79, of Estill Springs, Tenn., departed this life on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at his residence. Mr. Harting was retired from the United States Air Force. "Major Bill" as he liked to be called, was born on July 10, 1942 in Canajoharie, New York, and was the eldest son of the late, Walter and Hazel Pavlicheck Harting.
Major Bill received his bachelor's degree from San Jose State University in 1967 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant through the ROTC program. He married the former Judith Tonkin in that same year and they had two beautiful daughters together; Julie and Lori. For 20 years the Major served his country honorably in war and peace, while he and his family enjoyed living on or near military installations in California, Montana, Sicily and Tennessee.
The Major was a founder and President of the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society (HMGS) Mid-South Chapter which allowed him to attend and sponsor events at conventions throughout the east coast. He was recognized by HMGS with a lifetime achievement award in 2016 for his many contributions to the Society.
Major Bill remarried and is survived by his wife of over 30 years, Elfriede Berte Augusta Harting. The Major and Elfie made Estill Springs, Tennessee, their retirement home in 1987 and since then enjoyed the many friends and family who visited them. He is also survived by three younger brothers, his two daughters, a granddaughter, and numerous nephews and nieces.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the following caregivers for the wonderful job they did for Major Bill making his final days as sustainable as possible; Elna Mae Howard, Becky Bean, Tyler Baker, Kyra Pickett, Felicia Black, Taylor Fianco and Britney Tucker.
Services for Major Bill will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Friday, February 4, 2022, in the Chapel of Grant Funeral Services with Bro. Cecil Mathis officiating. Visitation to be held from 10:00 A.M. until service time on Friday at Noon.
