Obituary

ROY KENNETH "DUCK" GARNER, age 87, of Winchester, Tenn., departed this life on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at his residence surrounded by loved ones. He was born on September 24, 1935, to the late Roy Miller Garner and Annie Coker Garner Carson in the Oak Grove community of Tennessee. Due to a tragic event in his young life, he and his mother and sister moved to Decherd, Tennessee. He loved Decherd and all the friends that he made over his young life growing up there. Roy was an Air Force veteran and was primarily stationed at Thule Air Base in Greenland during his time in the military, where he was inducted into the Artic Order, Knights of the Blue Nose, for his time spent in the region. After his Air Force service, he returned home to Franklin County, and embarked upon a lengthy career with the State of Tennessee Dept. of Transportation Survey Office, retiring after 35 years of building roads throughout Middle Tennessee. He loved his job, and his co-workers were like family to him.

Roy loved baseball at an early age and played well into his adult years in the Mountain Valley League. In later years, he coached 16-to-18-year old young men in the Connie Mac League for Decherd. He loved coaching baseball and being a mentor to his young players. He stayed in touch throughout the years with many of his former players. He also enjoyed long games of golf with his friends and walking through the fields and forests with his beloved hunting dogs by his side. Another joy of Roy's was literature. He was an avid reader and enjoyed discussions about books. He was very generous with his personal library, and always wanted to make sure you had a good book to read. He was an excellent storyteller, too, and his tales, both tall and true, were always a pleasure to hear.

Roy was preceded in death by his sister, Laura Jean Williams, brothers-in-law, Tally Williams and John Rampy, and his lifelong best friend, J.C. Weaver. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Wilma Garner, his sister, Marilyn Rampy, his sisters and brothers-in-law, Charles (Juanita) Smith, Herschel (Jean) Smith, Betty Phillips, Arveta Bailey, as well as his nieces and nephews, to whom he will always be their beloved "Uncle Bud." In addition to his family, he will be greatly missed by his friends, neighbors, former co-workers and fellow Capitol Hill Church of Christ members. Roy, with his friendly and patient demeanor, was a father figure to many people. He was a quiet, humble and gentle man. He loved his family and they loved and adored him. He will be greatly missed.
